Eye Exam

Annual Eye Exam at Highland Eye Boutique

Sight is one of our most cherished senses and good visual health is critical to your quality of life. It allows you to see everything around you and enjoy everyday activities like driving, reading, watching TV and playing sports.  As children, 80% of what we learn is through our eyes.   So if vision is so important, why do people not have an annual eye exam to maintain clear vision and overall eye health?

We know we should get yearly physicals with our family doctor and our teeth cleaned twice a year.  Regularly you have the oil changed on our car, a pedicure and even take your dog to the vet for shots.  Why do many people feel we can skimp on our eye exam by an eye doctor?  One in five people are at risk for vision loss and with many eye problems and diseases, there are no obvious signs or symptoms until damage has occurred.  However,  an eye exam by an optometrist can diagnose these serious health problems such as hypertension, diabetes and cardiovascular disease before damage is done.  So even if you don’t need eyeglasses or contact lenses, an annual eye exam can ensure you are not only seeing well but can keep your eyes and body healthy.

A preventative eye exam is simple and painless.  Dr. Kristie Bennett, your intown Atlanta optometrist, will provide you a personalized eye exam which will evaluate not only how well you see, but also identify potential eye diseases.  She has been trained and worked with some of the most world-renowned eye doctors in their fields and is specialized in treating and managing eye diseases including dry eye, cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration.  Your optometrist will use the latest technology to assist in the examination to look at your entire eye.  Dr. Bennett hopes to make it a relaxing and fun experience that leaves you not only seeing great but feeling like that was one of the best eye exams your have ever had.  Plus there is no “air-puff” machine anymore that scares many patients!

What to expect at your eye exam at our intown Atlanta boutique

Your eye exam will take about one hour and during your exam, the following tests may be performed:

  • Visual acuity and a refraction to determine your best corrected visual potential
  • Visual field test to measure your peripheral vision
  • Pupil testing to see how your eyes respond to light
  • Intraocular pressure test to check for glaucoma (don’t worry- no puff of air)
  • Eye health assessment to look at the health of the cornea, lens, optic nerve, and retina
  • If needed, a variety of specialized tests

Dr. Bennett will most likely dilate the pupils of your eyes to see the optic nerve and retina in the back of your eyes.  The pupils are the window to the inside of the eye.  By opening the window with dilating drops, she will be able to see the inside structures of the eyes better.  The dilation takes about 15 minutes to become effective and it may make your vision a little blurry and sensitive to bright light for a few hours.  We recommend you bring sunglasses or we will provide a pair if you need them.  This is an important part of the eye examination because she will be able to see if eye diseases such as hypertension, diabetes or glaucoma are affecting the eyes.

At the end of your eye exam, Dr. Bennett will thoroughly review findings of your eye exam with you and answer all of your questions.
